Spiceworks Community Digest: Putting off that upgrade
In the high-stakes world of IT, humor is a survival instinct. The Spiceworks Community frequently hosts “Wrong Answers Only” threads, providing a digital breakroom where IT professionals can let off steam and vent some of their frustrations.
This week’s question: What happens if you don’t upgrade your system?
The unthinkable consequences of skipping an upgrade
From magical fairies to literal bugs, the Spiceworks Community imagined some creative scenarios of what happens when you’re loyal to an outdated version.
- dwo1064: “Patches and upgrades wipe out the bugs. If you don’t patch or upgrade they start crawling out of the vents and ports.”
- jcLAMBERT: “If you don’t upgrade, a magical fairy comes while you sleep and installs a Linux distribution.”
- Neal2314: “Updates are the cosmic glue holding your computer together as a corporeal entity. Without updates, your computer will collapse into the ether…”
- The Data Master: “The authorities show up and confiscate your PC.”
One user even went as far as to drum up a terrifying “Societal Standing Score” (SSS) collapse if you missed an upgrade.
- ich.ni.san: “Eventually, your societal standing score, ‘SSS’ will go down… eventually your upgrade status will reach the major credit reporting companies and your credit score will take a hit… you’ll end up broke, homeless, and alone with no real or digital friends.”
Several users also poked fun at some of the recent cybersecurity hacks stating that hackers actually prefer newer versions of the software, so it’s better to not update.
- JRBlood: “This is a BIG secret, but you’ll be fine. Hackers don’t look for these old versions anymore. They’re always looking for an easy way into a new version of OS/hardware/software/baconware.”
The Spiceworks Community is your burn out prevention
The “Wrong Answers Only” series is a perfect example of why the Spiceworks Community is essential for IT longevity. Letting off steam in a safe, peer-driven environment allows you to return to the real world (where upgrades actually matter and bugs don’t crawl out of vents) with your sanity intact.
