Spiceworks Community Digest: Derailing the AI hype train
A recent viral post regarding a satirical rollout of Microsoft Copilot has ignited a crucial discussion among IT professionals. The major question surrounding this article, and the last few years overall: Does AI live up to the hype or is it merely a marketing gimmick?
The Spiceworks Community had a generally clear stance: AI is a powerful tool, but it has its own challenges regarding governance, output quality, and a tendency for executives to chase buzzwords.
The governance challenge
For most organizations, the most immediate priority with AI isn’t using it but rather controlling it.
- J-Nonya: “Right now, our AI-focus is on creating a company policy to dictate use/adoption and control company data…once that’s done, we can move forward with information for end-users and maybe even adoption of a single ‘bot to standardize on.”
- Duckworth: “My current department doesn’t have much of a stance on AI at an enterprise level other than a note in the handbook that says to avoid inputting sensitive information or company data.”
Skepticism over AI usefulness
The Spiceworks Community showed that many IT professionals aren’t necessarily skeptical over AI, but rather how useful it can be in the day-to-day.
- Ed Rubin: “The first point is that the ‘AI’ being marketed to us are all LLMs or basically a process paging through a dictionary and an encyclopedia as fast as it can. Yeah I am an AI skeptic.”
- C-T: “AI is smoke and mirrors. It has its uses, but it’s not going to cause a technological revolution. LLM’s are great for brain storming, but I don’t use them to solve complex problems. I cannot tell you how many times they have been blatantly wrong.”
- Jimeagle: “AI is like any other shiny new toy (VR Headsets, Segway, etc). It will ‘revolutionize the world’ until everyone realizes it has plenty of shortcomings and limitations and then it will find its niche market…”
What do you think about the AI hype?
The ideal long term reality for AI is one where it’s leveraged enough to augment human expertise, rather than replace it entirely. Let us know your thoughts on the era of AI by joining the Spiceworks Community.
