It’s hard to believe we’re halfway through the 2020s, and the concept of “the office” has been thoroughly redefined. Between pandemic-driven remote work, company relocations, and the rise of the digital nomad, many IT pros are no longer chained to a cubicle.

A recent Spiceworks Community poll highlighted this mobility, asking users how many unique office locations they’ve worked from in the last five years. The data shows that very few IT pros have stayed completely stationary, with the majority having worked from three or distinct locations. Only 3% of respondents reported being fully remote with zero office visits, confirming that while work has changed, occasional travel or office presence is still common.

The weirdest places IT pros have worked

The flexibility of modern IT roles means “the office” is often wherever there’s a stable connection and a chair. The community shared some of the most unconventional spots where they’ve managed networks, fixed bugs, and answered critical calls, really demonstrating the art of working from anywhere.

  • Son of Jor-El: Described working from the 50th floor in the Hancock Tower in Boston, noting: “There was something really unsettling about looking out the window on a foggy morning and seeing nothing but clouds.”
  • Suzanne (Spiceworks): “a Jerusalem hotel room on Saturday… trying to get my computer to show our website in English since it automatically changed based on location.”
  • ElJosero: “A couple years back there was a time I was sitting in an airplane on the tarmac when my boss asked about a problem so I quickly solved it from my phone just before takeoff.”
  • TB33T: “Strangest was working out of a garage. Not fun once summer months came since the garage was not insulated so it was just as hot or hotter than outside.”
  • GeorgeSVFC: “An odd spot I’ve answered a work call: the west side of a nature sanctuary where I got enough signal to take a call while on a long weekend.”

This decade is defined by flexibility with the true value being it’s the ability to maintain business continuity and achieve a better work-life balance. Where’s the weirdest place you’ve worked? Share it with us on the Spiceworks Community!
